Three Reasons for Supporting the Necessity of God

September 20, 2024

Do you think the necessity for the existence of God is evidenced by the reality of what we can experience?

I believe the reality of what we can experience necessitates the existence of God. There are at least three points that come to mind to support this statement.

Intelligent design

The complexity and precision of our surroundings and universe begs the need for a Creator. The exactingness of our reality is too improbable to happen on its own or come from naturalistic processes. Everything from the intricate molecular designs in DNA to the gravitational constant are irreducibly complex; if one part of these scientific processes is removed, the whole system no longer functions properly. Even one tiny variation would make life impossible. The probability of one of these constants occurring naturally is extremely low. The culmination of all these constants occurring naturally is the product of each individual probability – which is infinitesimal. In addition, the design of reality is specified and complex – meaning it is highly improbable to naturally occur and it is of an independent pattern. Anytime that something is specified and complex, it indicates an intelligent source because it implies there was a design beforehand. An example is this web page. I’ve constructed coherent sentences with strings of characters that indicate an author and design before producing. So, combining the complex and specificity of the universe, the fine-tuning of the physical constants, and the infinitesimal probability of all these factors culminating together in the perfect way, the evidence supports the necessity of the existence of God.

Life comes from life

Life has always come from life. There are some theories against this that argue life can come from non-living matter. But, these theories fail to explain the creation of genetic code. In addition, an important distinction of life in this reference is that this is life that requires complex, unique DNA that requires an intelligent source. It is complex and specified; very similar to the aforementioned description of the universe. Thus, if it is complex and specified, that means there is a unique, independent pattern that implies design and author. This sort of information has always originated this way and cannot be explained by naturalistic processes. But this also introduces the Infinite Regress problem, or, where did the first life come from? It must have come from a Creator, a being outside space and time, who created life. This is because God, not bound by the physical properties of space and time, would not be subjected to the law of causes as we know them. He acts as the source of it and stops the infinite regress problem due to his eternal being. Consequently, because life comes life, it provides evidence for the necessity of the existence of God.

Objective moral absolutes

Humans have an objective sense of moral absolutes within us that must’ve come from an intelligent source, a Creator. While morality has fluctuated across time and cultures, there is a foundation that transcends across those axes that all humans share. We know this because moral values are not a physical property in reality but rather are grounded in our consciousness. An example of this is protecting children. Protecting children has been constituted as morally right from creation; where did that intuition come from? While the argument of evolution could explain a part of morality, it faces challenges in explaining the foundation of morality that we all know. It explains why we might have certain moral obligations today, but it does not explain whether these moral obligations are correct or incorrect. But, we can know this to be morally correct because a Creator has instilled that within us. Therefore, this provides grounds for the necessity of God because of our sense of objective moral absolutes.

Closing thoughts

While this is not proof of the necessity of the existence of God, I believe it provides compelling evidence that points to it. Some verses that came to mind as I was thinking this over: Romans 1:20, Acts 17:24-25, John 1:3-4, Romans 2:14-15.

Romans 1:20 ESV 'For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.'

Acts 17:24-25 ESV 'The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.'

John 1:3-4 ESV 'All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.'

Romans 2:14-15 ESV 'For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them'
